Anyone visiting the Grassmarket will quickly grasp that it has a gory past - for many years it was the site pf public executions. There is of course the pub ‘The Last Drop’ with its intentional double-meaning, and if you look closely at the east end you can make out the shape of a gallows marked out in the pavement.
